About Crime Stoppers Of Monterey County

CRIME STOPPERS OF MONTEREY COUNTY, Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit corporation administered by a volunteer citizen Board of Directors. It is community based and non-partisan. It is funded solely by donations. CRIME STOPPERS OF MONTEREY COUNTY, Inc. is modeled after and affiliated with Crime Stoppers International that was founded in New Mexico in 1976. There are now over 1000 other affiliates throughout the world. As a part of Crime Stoppers International, the local program has far reaching effects and possibilities.

The purpose of CRIME STOPPERS is to overcome the fear and apathy of the public by encouraging their anonymous involvement in assisting law enforcement agencies in the apprehension and conviction of criminals. We urge citizens to call the toll-free 1-800-499-CRIME anonymously with information about unsolved crimes and/or suspect criminals. If the information leads to an arrest, the caller may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

The three (3) essential elements in a successful CRIME STOPPERS program are:

l. Law Enforcement who provides cases, processes anonymous call information for further investigation, potential arrest and closing of case.
2. The Media – Television, press and radio publicizes the program on a regular basis. KCBA-TV CH 35 airs the ‘Crime of the Week’ every Tuesday during the 10 p.m. news, KION-TV CH 46 is expected to be added soon. Spanish language channels KSMS-TV CH 67, KMST-TV CH 26 air on Saturday, Sunday and/or Monday. The ‘Crime of the Week’ appears every Tuesday in the Salinas Californian, Thursday in El Sol, and on various days in The Herald and other newspapers between San Francisco and San Luis Obispo. Radio schedules vary with the individual stations.
3. The public, which includes law enforcement and media personnel, and volunteers are the most important part of this organization. The volunteer Board of Directors represents all residents. The Board is responsible for the program’s successful operation. The goal is to reach every person in our county of over 360,000 people with information on how to ‘STOP CRIME IN THE COMMUNITY SAFELY’.

Appearing at everything from neighborhood cleanup activities, county-wide festivities, fairs, farmers’ markets, schools to service club meetings, Crime Stoppers reminds the public that by ”Working together we CAN make a difference!’

CRIME STOPPERS’ volunteers have fingerprinted over 10,000 children (–since we began counting in 1994) – that’s 100,000 fingers – 20,000 hands! This reminds parents of the need for current identification kept immediately accessible. The fingerprints are recorded on an official California Department of Justice Personal Record card, which each child receives along with an explanation of its use in the event of an emergency. All members of the family receive a business size card with our toll-free number and briefly explaining the reward available when their calls result in an arrest.

In the seven years of existence, Crime Stoppers has caused to be arrested: murderers, attempted murderers, an attempted rapist, a child molester, a large scale indoor marijuana grower, a 6 year fugitive drug dealer, many drug dealers, a prescription drug dealer, three pedophiles in other California counties, a check fraud artist wanted for 4 years and a multiple violation felon. This was done with the assistance of many anonymous callers and the cooperation of the law enforcement agencies of Monterey County, other areas of California, Arkansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi and Florida. Our local program has a 100% conviction rate!

Working together we CAN make a difference!
